ASEAN in Today’s World (AsTW) is a two-week international study program focusing on ASEAN and East Asian affairs with the strong support from the ASEAN Secretariat. It is designed for university undergraduate students from around the world. The courses are mainly instructed in English.
Since the COVID-19 is still far from being under control in many countries, AsTW 2022 will be held online again co-organized by Kyushu University, Japan and Mahidol Univeristy, Thailand.

ONLINE COURSES

Asian Languages & Cultures (ALC)

The aim of ALC is to help students develop their proficiency in the languages and acquire the basic knowledge of the cultures in an integrated approach. Students will gain a general understanding of the culture and socio-linguistic context of the language. By the end of the course, students are expected to acquire some fundamental skills in listening, speaking, and a greater understanding of daily conduct in an appropriate cultural setting.
Each course is for two Kyushu University credits (30 credit hours). Students are required to select one course from the following three ALC elective courses.

ASEAN Studies (AS)

Through AS courses, students will broaden their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding about ASEAN and ASEAN+3 cooperation. The courses are offered by Kyushu University and Mahidol University. A speaker from ASEAN Secretariat will be invited to give a special, plenary lecture on the first-day of class. The two AS courses will start from the second class. It is a valuable part of the program where the students will be able to approach ASEAN and Asia from various perspectives.
Each course is for two Kyushu University credits (30 credit hours). Students are required to select one course from the following two AS electives.

VIRTURAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Be impressed in different cultures and enjoy cultural differences and common interests on the first and last day of the program. It is time to celebrate diversity to learn and understand each other’s perspectives, interests, and culture.

Students will be required to take two courses (1 ALC + 1 AS ) to complete the program.

CREDIT TRANSFER

Kyushu University will issue an official document showing completed courses along with credits earned by AsTW participants. The official documents will be sent to each student by regular mail in April/May. Participants should consult their home universities about transferring credit and grades in advance.

FEES

AsTW2022 online program fee: 81,200JPY (Approximately 730USD depends on the exchange rate)
Payment method of the program fee is overseas remittance. Further information on the payment procedure will be advised to participating students in late January, 2022.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Eligibility for Admission

The applicant should be a registered undergraduate (preferably) or a graduate student meeting the following criteria.

  • over 18 years old
  • possesses good academic standing (has the equivalent of a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) score of at least 3.0 out of 4.0)
  • fluent in the English language for academic purposes (either TOEFL IBT-68/ CBT-190/ PBT-530 or IELTS (Academic) -Band 5.5 or the equivalent)
  • will continue study at the home Party after finishing AsTW

SCHOLARSHIP


Kyushu University offers a limited number of scholarships to students from ASEAN countries who presents a strong academic record. All applicants are considered but priority will be given to students with ASEAN nationalities and currently studying at an ASEAN country.
There are no scholarship application forms to be filled out by an applicant. The scholarship award process will be on a competitive basis with an emphasis on applicants that can contribute the most to multi-cultural dynamics in and outside of the classroom. Officials from both Kyushu University and Mahidol University will make the decision on scholarship recipients.
