COURSES AND ACTIVITIES

1. Academic Course- Interdisciplinary Lecture Series (ILS)
While the current world affairs continue to separate us socially, emotionally, and perhaps even ideologically, it is time for us to start thinking about what we can do to help overcome these challenging times. For this lecture series, by listening in and learning from the lectures by scholars of various disciplines, the students are encouraged to think outside the box and apply what they take away from the sessions in visualizing possible approaches to the ongoing social, cultural, and economic challenges brought forward by the world affairs. We plan to offer a wide range of topics—some related to but not limited to Japan—so that the students may find their interests and align them with their study and career goals.
Over the course of the program, the ILS course provides 15 sessions and participants may earn 2 credits upon successful completion.

2. Language Course- Japanese Language Course (JL)
SIJ 2023 offers four levels of the Japanese Language (JL) course: Beginner, Elementary 1, Elementary 2 and Intermediate. SIJ participants will be placed in the appropriate class based on the results of the proficiency test given at the beginning.
Over the course of the program, the JL course provides 15 sessions and participants may earn 1 credit upon successful completion.

A student tutor will be assigned to each SIJ participant. These tutors are full-time, mostly undergraduate students at Kyushu University who are passionate about helping and engaging with international students. The one-on-one communication with your tutor will encourage you to practice and hone your Japanese language skills while also helping to broaden your knowledge of Japanese society and different cultures beyond Japan.

5. Home Visit
Home visit opportunities are available for participants: one local family for each participant in most cases. Frequent interaction with your local family will help you experience the Japanese social life and culture in the most authentic manners. Be sure to indicate in your application whether you wish to participate in the home visit program or not. Further information will be provided after the SIJ application period.
