Scholarships that can be applied for before arriving in Japan (before enrollment)
Kyushu University Friendship Scholarship
Kyushu University Friendship Scholarship” is Kyushu University’s own support program for privately financed international students. The scholarship is available to “Special Auditing Students”, “Special Research Students”, and “Double Degree Program Students” who have few opportunities to apply for scholarships. If you wish to receive this scholarship, please contact and apply for it through your prospective host department at Kyushu University.

Payment period
Depends on the study period. (3 months, 5 months, or 11 months)
There are two application periods per year.
First period: For students who will begin their studies at the university between April and September.
Second period: For students who will begin their studies at the university between October and next March.
Application method
Students should apply through the department that will accept them at Kyushu University. Please contact the person in charge of the exchange program at the faculty or graduate school you wish to study, or the student affairs office, to confirm the application method and eligibility requirements.
JASSO Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement)
This support program is provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) based on agreements related to student exchange, and is available to students enrolled at foreign universities who come to Japan to participate in our university's acceptance program while remaining enrolled at their home university (“Short-term Visiting Students,” “Special Audit Students,” and “Special Research Students”).
Students who are enrolled in a study program at Kyushu University that has been approved by JASSO and are coming to Japan can apply.

Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students
This scholarship is provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) for privately-funded international students. Applications are generally accepted twice a year (spring and fall), but there may be years when applications are not accepted.

Scholarships offered by private foundations
This section introduces scholarships offered by private foundations for privately funded international students that can be applied for prior to arrival in Japan (before enrollment).

ENEOS Xplora Scholarship for International Students (Indonesia)
Eligibility
- Self-funded international students enrolled in a master's program during the fall semester (including exchange students).
- Indonesian nationals with a “student” visa status while residing in Japan.
- Those who can communicate in Japanese or English.
- Those who will not study abroad outside of Japan during the scholarship period. (Additional conditions apply. Please refer to the application guidelines for details.)

YKK Leader 21 (Yoshida Scholarship Foundation)
Eligibility
- Nationals of countries in Southeast Asian countries, South Asian countries, West Asian countries, Central Asian countries, African countries, Mongolia.
- The candidate must be a graduate of a university in a country within the scope of the Scholarship Grant (which need not be located in the same country as the country of nationality) or have higher academic qualifications
- The candidate must be seeking admission to a master's program, doctoral program, or the third year of a direct doctoral program.
- The candidate must specialize in the field of natural science.
- The candidate must reside in one of the eligible countries for at least one year prior to the application deadline.
- The candidate must be under the age of 30 for master's programs and under the age of 35 for doctoral programs.(Additional conditions apply. Please refer to the application guidelines for details.)
Amount
A monthly stipend of 200,000 yen will be provided for living expenses throughout the scholarship period.
A total of up to 2,500,000 yen will be provided for school fees during the scholarship period.
Maintenance allowance (for eligible recipients) and round-trip transportation expenses will also be provided.
Payment period
Within two years from the month of enrollment in a Japanese graduate school (for master's programs) or within three years (for doctoral programs)

KMMF Scholarship (K.MATSUSHITA FOUNDATION)
Eligibility
- Students with excellent academic performance who conduct research related to either or both of the followings:
- Mutual understanding between Japan and other countries
- Coexistence of mankind and nature
International Students* from countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America who will start Master’s program in Japanese universities in fall (including those who already study in Japan as bachelor or research students)
"Asia" includes, West Asia (*1) , Central Asia (*2) , and Mongolia as north end and Indonesia as south end.
(*1) Six countries in Arabian Peninsula, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, and Cyprus
(*2) Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan
"Africa" includes countries in African continent and surrounding islands.
"Latin America" includes countries south of Mexico (including Caribbean countries).
* International students are designated as those students who possess a “Student” status of residence, according to the Immigration LAW.
Those who require financial assistance for their studies and are not receiving other scholarships.
Those who can participate in all official events hosted by the foundation several times a year.

The Uehara Memorial Foundation Research Fellowship Program
Eligibility
Eligible Research Areas
(Life sciences, particularly research related to the promotion of health, disease prevention, and treatment in the following fields)
- A. Traditional Oriental Medicine, Physical Medicine, Social Medicine, Nutrition, and General Pharmacy
- B. Basic medicine (other than the above)
- C. Clinical medicine (other than the above)
- D. Research in interdisciplinary fields aiming to create new technologies to support health and medicine, including information science, mechanical engineering, materials science, and other fields, that seek to significantly transform or shift existing academic frameworks or directions and possess the potential for rapid development.
Those coming to Japan to enroll in a doctoral program or those already enrolled in a graduate program
- (1) Those who are not Japanese nationals
- (2) Those who have been residing in Japan for a total of three years or less at the time of application
- (3) Those who are 39 years of age or younger at the time of application
- (4) Those who will conduct research for one year or more from the start of the grant
In addition, recipients are not eligible to receive scholarships from other institutions or foundations that exceed 100,000 yen per month.

JEES Ishibashi Foundation Scholarship (Spring) (Fall)
Eligibility
- Art History majors.(・"Art History" widely includes history of Architecture and Photography as well as the one of painting and sculpture etc.)
- Privately-financed international students applying from abroad to enroll in a master's (master's) or doctoral (doctoral) program (including graduate research students) at a university. The status of residence during the period of stay in Japan shall be “College Student”.

Up to 2 years (however, if the student enrolls in May or later, the maximum period is 2 years from the month of enrollment. If a student who has been granted a one-year scholarship as a research student enters a master's (master's) or doctoral (doctoral) program at the same university after the scholarship ends, the scholarship will be continued for a maximum of two years.)

JEES Scholarship (Few Acceptance Countries)
Eligibility
- Privately-funded international students who are enrolled at Tohoku University (including graduate schools) as a regular student or under an inter-university (including undergraduate) student exchange agreement. (a) Those who will be enrolled in April 2025,
(a) Those who will be enrolled in April 2025.
(b) Those who are scheduled to enroll in the fall semester of 2025. - The applicant must have received the equivalent of at least one school year of benefits if hired.
- Applicants must be from the countries/regions listed on the attached sheet or from countries/regions that the university judges as requiring special support, such as students from Ukraine, and their status of residence during their stay in Japan must be “College Student”.
- Applicants must not receive any other scholarships offered by the Foundation during the period of this scholarship, and the total amount of scholarships, etc. received from other organizations must be less than 600,000 yen (equivalent to 50,000 yen per month).

NSK Scholarship Foundation
Eligibility
- Those who plan to study abroad through a double degree program (DDP), etc. (all of which are study abroad programs for the purpose of obtaining a master's degree or higher).
- Applicants must be nationals of an ASEAN member country (Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos).
- Applicants must be under 35 years old at the time of application.
- Applicants must major in science and engineering (mechanical engineering, information science, or environmental engineering) as their field of research.
- Cannot be combined with other scholarships.

150,000 yen per month for living expenses

Travel expenses: actual cost of economy class sharing
