1. Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Applicants must be enrolled at a university outside Japan and, in principle, be undergraduate students majoring in Japanese studies (excluding first-year students at the time of participation in the course).
  2. The Japanese Language and Culture Course is conducted entirely in Japanese, and all classes and related activities are carried out in Japanese. Applicants must have completed intermediate-level Japanese language study and possess sufficient Japanese proficiency to take courses on Japanese society and culture offered in Japanese at Kyushu University. Applicants are expected to have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to approximately Level N1 of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
  3. Applicants must remain enrolled at their home university until completion of the course.

2. Application Procedures, Required Documents, and Deadlines

Applicants who wish to apply for the JLCC Program are required to complete the application form in Japanese.

(1) Applying for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship (Japanese Studies Student)

  1. Applying through Embassy Recommendation
    Applicants who wish to apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship through Embassy Recommendation should note that application procedures vary by country. For further details, please contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country directly.
  2. Applying through University Recommendation
    If your home university has concluded a university-level student exchange agreement with Kyushu University and has agreed to tuition and other fee waivers, you may apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship (Japanese Studies Student) through University Recommendation after undergoing the selection process at Kyushu University. For further details, please contact the office responsible for student exchange programs at your home university.

(2) Applying as an Exchange Student under a University-Level Student Exchange Agreement

Applicants must submit their online application by the designated deadline through the exchange program office of their home university.

For detailed information on the application procedure, please contact the exchange program office of your home university.

3. Admission Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated comprehensively based on the following criteria：

  1. Academic performance at the home university
  2. Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate
    * Applicants are required to take an online Japanese language placement test administered by the International Student Center of Kyushu University within the designated period after the application deadline. An interview may also be conducted if necessary. Please note that individual inquiries regarding the test results cannot be answered.
  3. Study Plan
  4. Letter of Recommendation from the home university
  5. Other relevant factors

4. Tuition Fees and Fee Waivers

JLCC students are required to pay the following tuition, admission, and examination fees:

A) Tuition Fee: JPY 29,700 per month
B) Admission Fee: JPY 84,600
C)Examination Fee: JPY 9,800

However, all of the above fees will be waived if either of the following conditions applies:

  1. Your home university has concluded an inter-university student exchange agreement with Kyushu University, and you participate in this program as an exchange student under the agreement.
  2. You have been selected by the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology [MEXT]) as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student in the “Japanese Studies Students” category, and Kyushu University has approved your acceptance into the program.

5. Scholarships

  • Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for “Japanese Studies Students” (see Section 2-(1) above)
  • Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) “Student Exchange Support Program”
    If you wish to apply for the JASSO “Student Exchange Support Program,” please indicate this in your application documents.
    Please note that Kyushu University will conduct an internal screening process to select candidates for recommendation.
