1. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Applicants must be enrolled at a university outside Japan and, in principle, be undergraduate students majoring in Japanese studies (excluding first-year students at the time of participation in the program).
  2. The Japanese Studies Program is conducted entirely in Japanese, and all classes and related activities are carried out in Japanese. Applicants must have already completed intermediate-level Japanese language study and possess sufficient Japanese proficiency to take courses on Japanese society and culture offered in Japanese at Kyushu University. Applicants are expected to have passed Level N1 of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or possess equivalent Japanese language proficiency.
  3. Applicants must remain enrolled at their home universities upon completion of the program.

2. Application Guidelines, Required Documents, and Deadlines

Applicants wishing to apply for the JLCC Program are required to complete the application form in Japanese.

(1) Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students (Japanese Studies Students)

  1. Applying through Embassy Recommendation
    Applicants who wish to apply as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship student through Embassy Recommendation should note that application procedures vary by country. For further details, please contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country directly.
  2. Applying through University Recommendation
    If your home university has concluded a university-level student exchange agreement with Kyushu University and has also agreed to mutual tuition waiver arrangements, you may apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship (Japanese Studies Student) through University Recommendation after undergoing the selection process at Kyushu University.

(2) Direct Application

Applicants must submit their online application by the deadline indicated, through the exchange program office of their home university.
For detailed information on the application procedure, please contact the exchange program office of your home university.

3. Admission Criteria

The selection will be conducted comprehensively based on the following documents

  1. Official Academic Transcript at Home University
  2. Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate
    * Applicants are required to take an online placement test administered by the International Student Center of Kyushu University during the designated period. An interview may also be required if necessary. 
  3. Study Plan
  4. Letter of Recommendation from the home university
  5. Other materials

4. Tuition and Tuition Waivers

JLCC students need to pay a tuition fee, an admission fee and an examination fee as below.

A) Tuition Fee: 29,700yen (monthly fee)
B) Admission Fee: 84,600yen
C) Examination Fee: 9,800yen

However, if you meet either of the following conditions (1) or (2) below, all of the fees listed above will be waived.

  1. If your home university has concluded an inter-university student exchange agreement with Kyushu University, and you participate in this program as an exchange student under such an agreement.
  2. If you are selected as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student under the “Japanese Studies Students” category and are accepted by Kyushu University.

5. Scholarships

  • Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship “Japanese Studies Students” (see 2-(1) above)
  • Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) “Student Exchange Support Program”
    Applicants must clearly indicate in the application documents whether or not they wish to apply for these programs.
    Please note that nominees will be selected by Kyushu University through an internal screening process.
