1. The purpose of JTAS
In this program, the following will be focused on throughout the program of study:
- Fundamental Japanese for foreign students living in Japan.
- Japanese relevant to the culture and society of Japan, to aid in a deeper understanding of the culture, customs, and society.
2. Courses
1) For zero beginner students
The following 4 subjects are compulsory for those who have never learned Japanese.
1. Integrated course
Textbook: “Genki I (3rd edition)” and “Genki Ⅱ (3rd edition)”, The Japan Times.
2. Speaking course
Textbook: “Genki I (3rd edition)” and “Genki Ⅱ (3rd edition)”, The Japan Times.
3. Kanji course
Accurate reading is the focus of classes for learners from countries where Chinese characters are used but who do not know how to read kanji in Japanese despite of their considerable knowledge of kanji. Students will also increase their vocabulary with words based on the kanji they have learned.
Textbook: “Genki I (3rd edition)” and “Genki Ⅱ (3rd edition)”, The Japan Times.
4. Culture and Presentation course
This course covers Japanese culture, Japanese society and Japanese ways of thinking, etc. mainly by learning about the following elements:
- Learn about Japanese culture and Japanese society, such as the Japanese diet, education system, subcultures and Japanese life. Also includes Japanese cultural experiences such as cooking practice of Japanese food and a day trip.
- Acquire skills to explain one’s own country and culture in Japanese. At the completion of the course, students will make presentations about their own country and culture, taking questions and answers in Japanese.

2) For those who have studied Japanese
Those who have learned Japanese before can take 3 or more courses from the 5 courses listed below. Since the courses available vary depending on levels, please write to intlr-isc@jimu.kyushu-u.ac.jp for more information.

1. 集中日本語コースの目的
このコースでは次の教育を実施しています。
- 日本での留学生活に必要な基礎的な日本語の教育。
- 日本文化・社会への適応に向けた教育。具体的には、日本文化、日本の習慣、 日本社会などについての知識を習得する。
2. 受講コース
1) 日本語未習者
次の4科目が必修になっています。
1. 総合コース
教科書:『げんきⅠ(第 3 版)』、『げんきⅡ(第 3 版)』ジャパンタイムズ
2. 会話コース
教科書:『げんきⅠ(第 3 版)』、『げんきⅡ(第 3 版)』ジャパンタイムズ
3. 漢字コース
漢字圏の学習者は、多くの漢字を知ってはいても日本語としての読み方は知らないため、正確な読み方に重点をおいて学習を進める。更に、学習漢字が使われている語彙の知識を増やしていく。
教科書:『げんきⅠ(第 3 版)』、『げんきⅡ(第 3 版)』ジャパンタイムズ
4. 文化&プレゼンテーションコース
このコースでは主に次の内容を学習することで、日本文化や日本社会、日本人の考え方などを学ぶ。
- 日本の食生活、教育制度、サブカルチャー、日本人の生活など、日本文化と日本社会について学ぶ。また、日本文化体験として、日本食の調理実習や日帰り旅行なども行う。
- 自分の国や文化について日本語で説明する技能を身につける。コース修了時には、自分の国・文化について日本語でプレゼンテーションおよび質疑応答を行う。
