1. JLCC – Year Abroad to Japan to Study in Japanese
Japanese Langage & Culture Course (JLCC)
Are you a Japanese Studies major interested in living and studying in Japan for about a year to advance your knowledge of the culture and to strengthen your command of the language, not just in the classroom but also in daily life settings? If your answer is ‘yes,’ then JLCC is an ideal study program for you.
JLCC is an eleven-month study program, beginning in October and ending in August of the following year, and Japanese is the medium of all learning activities. This program is designed primarily for students majoring in Japanese Studies/Japanese Language at an undergraduate level of study who already possess an advanced level of proficiency in Japanese.
Through this program, you will develop the strong academic foundation and cultural skills necessary to grow as a Japan expert in the field of your future career through a highly effective language program and an individual research project as well as a range of unique and rigorous subject courses in Japanese Studies. Toward your experiential learning, JLCC also conducts a variety of field study trips and on-campus activities for cultural exchange. Furthermore, you will be paired up with a student tutor to provide you with one-on-one support and friendship throughout your study period. The program is based at Kyushu University’s main campus (Ito Campus), and you will be guaranteed a furnished room at a university-owned dormitory. Scholarships may be available on a competitive basis.
To apply, you are required to be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited university outside Japan and to possess a proven proficiency in Japanese at an advanced level – preferably at Level 1 (N1) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or the equivalent – at the time of application.

2. SIJ – Summer Intensive Program in English
Summer In Japan (SIJ)
Are you interested in exploring, during the summer time, contemporary Japanese society and culture, including the basics of the language? If so, consider participating in SIJ. This program offers you an intensive, full package of living and learning experience to help achieve your goals.
SIJ is a four-week study program, lasting typically from mid-June through mid-July (subject to change, annually). English is the medium of all learning activities. SIJ is designed primarily for undergraduate students and beginners of Japanese Studies; it helps you effectively acquire entry-level knowledge of the society and culture and the basics of the language through intensive coursework for credit consisting of both subject and language courses that are arranged specifically for this summer program.
This program also conducts various field study trips, homestay arrangements, and on-campus cultural activities for your cultural immersion experience. Moreover, you will be paired with a Kyushu University student who will provide you with one-on-one support and friendship throughout your study period. SIJ is based at Kyushu University’s main campus (Ito Campus), and your accommodation will be assured with a combination of a furnished room at a university-owned dormitory and a homestay opportunity arranged by the program. Scholarships may be available on a competitive basis.

3. AsTW – Study with Kyushu University Students in Southeast Asia
ASEAN In Today’s World (AsTW)
The 21st century is the century of Asia, and the future prospects of ASEAN – member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – hold the key to the future growth of Asia and the rest of the world. You will find AsTW a unique opportunity to intensively explore, in an ASEAN member country, the unique qualities, current major issues, and future prospects of in Asia – with special attention to an ASEAN-Japan relation – together with students from Kyushu University, other universities in Japan (e.g., Fukuoka Women’s University) and ASEAN member countries. This is a short-term, international and multilateral study program designed mainly for students at an undergraduate level of study and arranged and conducted jointly by the ASEAN Secretariat, Kyushu University, and its partner institutions, which are leading universities in the ASEAN region, participating in this renowned program.
AsTW lasts two weeks from late February to early March and uses English as the medium of communication for all activities. The mission of this program is to nurture the next generation of leaders in a variety of professional fields in, or related to, southeast Asia, Asia at large, and beyond. AsTW offers you various options for intensive subject courses about social, cultural, and environmental issues in Asia, as well as language courses. The program also arranges locally-specific field activities as cultural excursions and cultural exchange activities for cross-cultural experience. This intensive itinerary of academic and experiential learning activities will enrich your study abroad experience as you befriend students from Kyushu University and participating institutions, study closely with each other on a daily basis, and more! The program site rotates every three years among the participating institutions in the ASEAN regions; The program is held at Malaya University, Malaysia, from 2018 through 2020. From 2021 through 2023, Mahidol University, Thailand serves as the host institution. Scholarships may be available on a competitive basis.
